Recalling the life of our Lord Jesus Christ here on earth, it must be really hard for our Lord to say and think what He has to say and think. The Old Testament's Judaism was the main stream or popular religion during Jesus time. Whether we like it or yes, Jesus spoke of God in more intimate and personal terms, such 'I in you; you in Me', 'My Father and I are One' et cetera et cetera. The Scribes of the Pharisees, Sadducees and Sanhedrin's members thought that Jesus was not speaking the same way they spoke. If Jesus is in physical person today as He was about 2000 years ago, many Christians might not accept Him today. Just simply because He is not fit into their various policy and programs. Jesus dare to think out of the box. He received sinners while the religions condemn sinners. Jesus could be consider heretic in His time by the main stream religion. But Jesus knew the Truth and that truth make Him dare to face all odds. Now let me also say something which my Master Jesus did. Dare to be different.

You might want to spank me for saying this but it is true that most of our Christian churches value some big shoots people than an ordinary human being who is just received Jesus. Further, let me add salt to the wound. A Government Officers in the church pew is much more value than an ordinary members. For instance, how do we look at a church with a bunch of government officers and rich folks and also look at the church where the members are known for their past deeds. There is nothing wrong in having a church with officers and rich folks. It is a blessing. But my argument is not about the social status of the member itself. My argument is about our perception about how we value the church according to social status of the church congregation. I would like to introduce the congregation of the Jesus fellowship. Tax collectors, sick people, practically poor, Samaritan, morally doubtful people and sinners of all kind! When people saw them, they ask what kind of fellowship is this? A bunch of sinners!

Many of our churches today are richer than Jesus fellowships in His day. We are burden by the thought of church buildings, church properties, church bank account (if any) et cetera et cetera. There is nothing wrong in building beautiful chapel for worships and you are right to think that it is the house of God. The Israelite did build a beautiful house of God. Some years back, due to communal conflict between tribal groups in Manipur, I took Jessami Road to reached Nagaland on my way to Kerala. When our bus passed through the mountain range of Ukhrul District, I saw many churches buildings at the highest point of the village and the most beautiful building was their church building. It was beautiful sight to see and really inspiring. I believe they want to make sure that the church building should be in the best place and most beautiful one. It challenged me to give my best for God. On the other hand, I also witness in some places that they build mansions for their residence but their church building roof is leaking, the walls are faded, the clock on the tower is not working, and the long list follow. Absolutely, we need to build a place of worship the best way we can. It can be a reflection of our faith, our commitment to our God. There is something wonderful about our tribal people in the Northeast India. When the gospel was preached in the village, within a short period of time, the whole village got saved. Such wonderful grace of God can seen only among the tribal hill people of Manipur, Nagaland and Mizoram. Since, almost all people of the village got saved and their neighboring villages are also having almost the same condition as they are, the only priority they can think of is building the most beautiful church building. Now those were the days. As we are gradually aware of mission mandate of the body of Christ, we are to look beyond our own community, tribes, regions et cetra. This is the immediate context of the tribals of Northeast India.

Having beautiful building of worship is very wonderful thing. On the other hands, seeing the human conditions, can church continue to overlook the call for mission. The church is mindful of church building than mission today. The church is mindful of the physical structure than spiritual need. The pastors/bishops and other ecclesiastical order are mindful of keeping their assignment and to remain in the financial stable churches. Let me share my little experience I have been through in Delhi city as young minister of our Lord. My priority is to visit and pray for them. As part of my mission, I have to find a place of worship for this young people. I approached few churches and Christian institutions in the south Delhi but most of them are booked till 7pm which is very healthy signs. However, to my surprise, some of the pastors/fathers/bishops/ are hard to meet! I know it is good to have appointment and orderly system but christian should not be that strict when it comes to meeting people. Imagine, you come to God and someone in the pearly gates told you that God is super busy! Make an appointment with Peter or Paul! Common, ministers you are CEO of different kind not like of this world. Now, many churches adopted an interesting policy of just accommodating only their church members and their church alone. This is also not at all a bad policy. The priority of the ministers is always his/her flocks. Moreover, there are many cultist groups sprung up recently and we cannot even imagine our churches building are used by those groups. But on the other hand, just by looks we can't dismiss right away like a secular boss would do. Then we are no different than them. Where is our 'light and saltiness'. May be by our act of kindness and persuasion, he/she may turn from wrong to right. Oh ministers, if we are continue to looks at peoples from our eyes, we won't feel the love for the lost souls but if we try to look from eyes of God, we'll see how God sees. I feel ministers should not be dictator but counselor. And good counselor always 'listen'. If my attitude turn some poor soul away, you are in danger.

Coming back to our argument, these days many churches are turning into an powerful economical enterprise. We are concern more with tithing and offering than counting saved souls. Our church budget for building and properties are little higher than mission funds. When we get to heaven, as if there is a competition for best church building! We are more concern with investing in some profitable ventures than to spend on those who are in needs among the congregation. Yes, you might be arguing with me now that the church need to sustain and prosper. You are right, the church need resources to sustain itself. However, let me put one question here, are the church building made for the people or people made for the church building? Which is one is our priority souls or prosperity. If the church is giving church, that church will grow. When the church started to act like what the church should be doing, i.e. preaching and reaching to those in needs of gospel, our world will be much better world. When every soul is value equally, that church is a church indeed.

"Contextualize Theology" something to ponder

While my brief stay in the Republic Of Philippines, I came across this word 'dancing God'. In India, we do have a hindu's dancing god called Shiva or Siva. This Shiva is a god of destroyer (in hindu religions, they have god who creates, who destroy, so on and so forth). Filipino are jolly people, they are cheerful and cordial and the most friendly people in the Asia if not in the whole world. They love to sing and dance. We will find karaoke bar or eateries with karaoke machines in almost every kilometer radius. It maketh me to think life twice! We don't know what is tomorrow will bring. of course, for Christian, our unknown tomorrow is safely secured in the hands of God. But let us see our life here on earth.

When we think of contextualizing our theological ideas and interpreting the message of the Kingdom of God into our own context and experience, we can't rely so much on the tools and instruments of the western scholarship. One of the tool that we use without much given a thought is the culture. Since Christianity is a way of life (as against the idea of Christianity as religion). By saying that Christianity is a way of life, many times, we end up adopting western way of life. In strictest sense it is western culture. Another vital challenge is to dissect what is western and what is modern, though we live in post modern era. For the west, it is post modern era while for many Asian nations, we are struggling even to term with modern era. There is a problem where people who hardly attain modernity has to clash with post modernity and the result is complete chaos. Negligence to ones' culture and tradition is one of the serious fallout of endorsing western culture without knowing the consequence. This negligence also has a spiraling effect on the condition of our day to day life. People seems to be in notion that our culture and tradition hold no values for the present. On the other hand, failing to prove its worth creates a kind of catharsis for those who want to eat and sleep western!

For this reason, contextualization has a tremendous task before starting contextualization. Rediscovering and reinterpreting our cultural and traditional value become equally important in the task of contextualization.
Now, my dancing lesson come into picture. For Filipino dancing is a way of life, it signifies their joyous nature. God must be a dancing God if God is the God of Filipino!

I don't understand!

The meaning of Christian has been jeopardize and damaged by some "holier than thou" people. Something is terribly missing the today's Christian. As far as the meaning of Christian is concern, it means follower of Christ! not something like religion of sect of this world. Many Christians missed the core value and principle of the Christian. Christ is all about loving, caring, sharing, and giving to all those who are deprived of such. It is easy to love those who are able, easy to care for those are well to do, easy to share with those whom we trust, generous to give to those who can give us back some day! Absolutely there is complete absent of Christian value in this kind of actions and way of life. I hate myself when I found in one those situations. You might also feel the same, sometime if not always. If Christian live out at least little of Christ likeness, how beautiful it can be. We think more of ourselves than others, we care for ourselves more than others. Yes, we must take care of ourselves but not at the cost of others. We think more of building and securing our church building than taking care of dying and rotten souls! For those who can see inside, our hearts must be like a painted graveyard. Shall we take our church building to the abode of God?

Missing Theology

One fine day (while, for some, it might not be that "fine"), one good but little known friend from other planet cracked joke for me. I was trying to get the gist of his joke but unfortunately it never happened. For my friend, he still find his own joke very funny and he laughed all along until the end of the joke. Just to avoid embarrassment, I joined him, though I felt little awkward. Realizing that I was not quite following him, he started to explain the joke. Now, when the joke is explain or translated, it is not that funny as it should be in the first impression. I finally realized that I will never understand my friend's joke until I immerse myself into his community.
Now, another story which is happening in most of the Asian countries is missing theology. I don't need to explain the meaning of 'theology'. We understand generally that it has something related to God. If you are expert in theology, I can see you trying to define what is theology while reading this small note. I agreed, you are better than me in defining 'theology'. So, I let me make myself clear to you that I am not trying to do anything to nullify your 'high theology'. But I am trying to wake you up to something real. Imagine, the real situation of the people whom you are serving and preaching day-in and day-out, hitting and breaking the pulpit, making people more sinful by revealing the holiness of God from the Bible, etcetera etcetera. That is fantastic! You are praying and reading and more praying and more reading! Great job. You and I have been doing that for years and years. But the real problem is still there among us. Intensive poor! abused women & child, alcoholics, corruptions, human rights violation, destroying environment, drugs and prostitutions, people living with HIV/AIDS, etcetera etcetera. and you have more lists than mine. Does our theological endeavor has nothing to do with all these issues and your lists of issues. Talking about heaven and hell, some people are already living in the hell now. Imagine, a jobless couples with five young children having last bowl of rice, not knowing how and where can they get for another meal. They just can't simply die. It is hell of a living. There are worst scenarios than these.
We have a great task in reaching out those marginalized group of people in the society for Jesus also did the same. Until we follow our Master's footsteps, we are doing a 'missing theology'.

look before you go further

<meta equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; <![endif]-->
Northeast India was known by many conspicuous accolades such as “Jewel of India,” “Switzerland of the East”, and many more. Without doubt our past was magnificently good and topographically striking. There was a time we were living in abundance. Streams of fresh water, countless flora and fauna, mountains were indeed grandeur, generosity of your neighbours were immeasurable, traditional values above reproach, colourful customs, pollution of any kind was unheard of. Indeed God must have taken time to create such land where we can’t have even a glimpse of it now. One might not agree with me if I say I feel pity for the present generation. For nowhere we can find such a life of peace and tranquillity our forefather had lived. Yes there was a time they also fought one another and even took somebody’s head to appease the tradition they thought was right and act of valiant. Now, we have to try such rather strange practice and the good life of abundance. I am sure they lived in peace most of their life and with abundance.

Romanticising about the past is something we can’t ignore effortlessly. It helps us sometimes to recreate our past. Nay, we can’t go back to the past! Knowing our past is vitally important for us to go forward. The past serve as a reference or as a guide. Without knowing our past, we are bound to have identity crisis. If one can seriously able to study and analyse the past, such one will have clear sense of direction for the future. It is like a catapult. Unless we pull the string to the maximum we cannot exert enough force to shoot our target. So, do not think that the writer is romanticising about our past. It is lesson for the young generation to ponder some thoughts before stepping further to the future.

Being Human!

The world is getting better and worst everyday. The number of terrorist attacks also increasing in tandem with the number of military forces deployed by terrorist-free-loving countries. I don't want and you don't want terrorist! Economic recession: who wants it? Nobody. Drought and typhoons: nobody wants it. Hunger and poverty: nobody wants it. And many hundreds of social issues and crisis we are facing today. The poor and rich alike want to stay alive. Well, there are some poor and rich who want end their lives! There seem to be problem no matter how poor or rich. The poor people think, why the rich are getting richer. Well at the same time, the rich also asking why the number of poor are increasing every day.
In business language, to stay on the course of business, one has to make profit. In other word, there should be at least two when you invest one. If we can make more than two, we can call it good business. So the rich are trying to make two most of the time, which is normal for them. Well, the onlookers, the poor, are not impressed with such making two out of one at somebody cost.
Now at the face of impending imperialistic driven globalization, the option for the poor is getting bleaker. Despite many programs for the poor and needy, the explosion of the poor population seems to be unstoppable. So far there is no worthy to recall schemes or project for the "really poor" population. For instance, if you want to avail the schemes or benefits, you have to show many identity proof, of which the really poor could not afford to have. Look at the beggars in the street, the first poor people who need immediate attention is those people in the street. Instead of distributing sweets and roti, finding a place for shelter and menial job seem plausible to me. In fact I would say more human!

Doing theology and mission among Zeliangrong

The following is an abstract from my thesis

Abstract
Kamang Gangmei, Jaojianlung. In most cases, culture is shaped and influenced by religious faith and practice. To embrace new religious faith and practice, one is expected to renounce what he or she believed in earlier. Such is the trend in most of the Asian countries. Asians are basically a religious people. The major world religions are originated from Asia is an indication of Asian religiosity. The life of the community; manners and customs, foods, observing of times such as full moon or half moon, and many more cultural practices are directly related to religious belief and practice.
The Zeliangrong people, a small tribal group of just about 3 million population, occupy a compact geographical block consisting of Tamenglong district of Manipur, Peren District of Nagaland and further fragmented by administrative bifurcations in Cachar district, N.C. Hills of Assam, Senapati, Churachandpur, Imphal East & West, Thoubal and Bishnupur district of Manipur in the North East India. Since the arrival of the Christianity[1], there has been a tremendous change among Zeliangrong people. It was so powerful that it defaced the culture of the Zeliangrong to the point of extinction. The people experienced immense blessings from God in many expects of life. However, there is also an adverse affect which cost the Zeliangrong people dearly. The blessing of culture which makes the Zeliangrong people unique from the rest of the world is fading. It is indeed a great blessing but people interpretation of the Christianity is somewhat subjugation in nature over culture.
However, the gospel of Christ is an empowering reality; it is liberation from any sort of bondage. God created Zeliangrong people, surely God wills the people to live the way it intended them to be. Culture is not necessarily a sin.
The Zeliangrong culture and tradition were ‘paganized’ by ignorant interpretation of the Christian faith. This project is an attempt to ‘de-paganize’ Zeliangrong culture through reexamining culture in the light of truth revealed in the Scripture. The primary objective is to empower the Zeliangrong with the gospel by maintaining a balance between faith and culture. This is a project of de-paganization. [2]

[1] Christianity came to the land of Zeliangrong through one evangelist name Maipak. He was from Kuki tribe, a neighboring tribal group in the region. He came to Barak valley in the middle part of 1900s. Barak valley is where Zeliangrong people are concentrated though they can be also found in others places in the region as well as in Myanmar. The grandfather of the writer, (Late) Mr. Zinlakpou Gangmei was the first Christian among the Zeliangrong people. This information has been pass on from grand father to me and I am going to pass on to following generation orally through story and in written

[2] Paganization is my description for an act of making ones’ culture and tradition a pagan or heathen. De-paganization is an act or process of understanding and respecting ones’ culture as God given identity, thereby removing all prejudice against ones’ culture just because they are different from you and your culture.

NOTE: The “pagan” here referring to the negative connotation, a pejorative term, mostly by the traditional Christian to those people groups who are not subscribed to Christian faith. The word usually understood as referring to savage, non religious, uncivilized, etc.

Nehemiah; my ideal leader

There are many characters in the Bible, whose stories has been a sources of excitement and inspiration to me since very young. One among them is Nehemiah. However, I he was not my hero while I am teenage for various reason. One of the many reasons was he wants to do a heavy work. It was not a fancy idea to work hard the way Nehemiah worked for a teenage like me. Though I was not that lazy! Yet, the idea of working was something like imposing those times. May be I am looking from the workers point of view not from the engineer point of view (thinking more on hard manual labor). But as I grew up to be a man and putting aside my childish part of me, I realized how Nehemiah must have felt when he was leading the people in rebuilding the ruined city.
I am very much impressed by his leadership role, his courage to speak to the king what was in his heart. It must be like one from the poor country got job at White House and wanting to go back to his/her homeland, where villages are wash away or blown away by the military or civil war. Certainly, Nehemiah must have good life in the foreign land. It must be not that easy to leave good job to return home.
Nehemiah set an example for many future leaders. He was a real leader, who considered his land more than his comforts. If I am thinking about myself and my immediate family or going little further – say relatives, I would comfortably seek job in the foreign land and send them money. There is nothing wrong in that, if we don’t have a calling for leadership. But when one is called to lead, he/she is restless until the mission accomplish. Leaders think in larger context and they deserve respect and honor. There are many leaders among us today, whose motives are to make profit or generate wealth. Those are not leaders but ravaging “wolves in sheep’s clothing”. While accomplishing the task of rebuilding the city, there arose an opposition. No matter how good is the intention of the leader, there will always have an opposition. Nehemiah didn’t give in to the pressure but continue till the end. I am reminded of the hardships and oppositions I might possibly encounter as a leader. I can refer Nehemiah’s story as a manual for leadership.

Spirituality and Sexuality: body and soul together

In the opening remarks, the speaker of the forum tells about the disquiet of the subject to many of us, whether be it clergy or layman. To speak about sexuality and spirituality seems to be taboo to many of the culture not only to the Christianity. However, the literatures and the ancient remain such as statues and temples, somehow seem to tell different story.

I am confident that human sexuality was there from the very beginning of the creation. I also believed that it was created for good purpose. I agreed to the notion that “sex” is more than just for procreation. It is for love, intimacy, relationship, and “entertains” our humanness. Or in other word to quince our desire for pleasure. Humankind have been and always will be seeks for all these love, intimacy, relationship, and pleasures. Now the question of sex being bad or sinful came to fore when Hellenistic philosophy intruded into the simple faith Christianity. Ever since this happened, the church has been constantly confronted by the issue.

Notwithstanding it mean for good, it becomes immorality when it is misuse. Sex is immoral not because it is originated from humankind. Sex is immoral and wrong because devalue humanity. When there is immorality, there is also hatred, envy and jealous. If there is such, the very purpose of sex failed. Anything is good and not necessarily bad when it is within the limit and border.

Above all, the Scripture tells us to be away from immorality and going further not even to stay with them. The numerous New Testament references concerning immorality are:

Matt. 5:32/19:9 - "divorces. except for the cause of unchastity/immorality"

Matt. 15:19/Mk. 7:21 -"out of the heart come adulteries, fornications

Acts 15:20,29; 21:25 - "abstain from idols and from fornication"

I Cor. 5:1 - "there is immorality among you..."

I Cor. 6:13 - "the body is not for immorality, but for the Lord"

I Cor. 6:18 - "flee immorality.. the immoral man sins against his own body"

I Cor. 7:2 - "because of immoralities, each man have his own wife"

I Cor. 10:8 - "nor let us act immorally"

II Cor. 12:21 - "not repented of impurity, immorality, sensuality"

Gal. 5:19 - "deeds of the flesh are immorality, impurity, sensuality"

Eph. 5:3 - "do not let immorality or impurity be named among you"

Col. 3:5 - "consider the members of your body to be dead to immorality, impurity, passion,. which amounts to idolatry"

I Thess. 4:3 - "the will of God is your sanctification, that you abstain from sexual immorality"

              Rev. 2:14,20,21; 9:21; 14:8; 17:2,4; 18:3,9; 19:2

When there is so much teaching, one can not ignore the warning of the Scripture. The subject should be taught cautiously. It is written so that it is profitable for the body of Christ. We should tell the truth always. However, we should also tell them the limitation and border, the consequences if misuses the liberty. If we are not able to tell them clearly on the subject, it will bring only confusion. Truth come along with risk.

Life of Brian

Funny and hilarious! The very first scene of the movie tells something about that will be portraying in the entire length of the movie.

At the very outset, I felt it is rebellious movie against Christianity. Yes, one has the freedom to express his or her opinion but not at the expense of others. I observed nothing but a figment of human imagination. Beyond doubt, the movie intended to portray Brian to the life of our Lord Jesus Christ. Well, to the writer of the movie, Jesus was Messiah by accident. The life of our Lord can not be accidental or funny as it appear in the movie. We sit back and laugh at the drama, wickedly created by some comedian. But at the second thought, I felt being ridiculed by the movie. Any elements of truths in the movie are accidental.

If I have to relate the movie to my congregation, certainly it would be to warn them of such movie. One can think of any subject critically but if our critical thinking is not guided properly, it would bring only chaotic situation. Wild imagination can be amounted to critical thinking. Every part of the movie makes fun of the early Christian. It can’t be that funny. If its true the whole Christian thing is a big joke and I don’t believed it is a great joke.

However, as a movie it is funny and hilarious. A very creative project; an attempt to bring the story happened ca 2000 years ago to the present context. For instance the ex-leper man, his only mean to earn for his food was by begging. Once he was made well, he can’t beg any longer. It is like cutting his livelihood. Since he can not identify with the leper nor with common people, his state of life hangs in nowhere. There are many among us today, who are like ex-leper. You are fine and ok but nowhere to find job! But one can see and still can seek for sustenance. Jesus made us whole so that we are open to the wider and larger opportunity.

Dobol Trobol

When I first saw the advertisement for “Dobol Trobol” on the TV, I thought it is the Tagalog version of the John Paragon’s “Double Trouble”. I don’t know much Tagalog but I love to watch Tagalog movies. There is a saying, “Action speaks louder then words”! Well this is very much true to me when it comes to music and movie. I listened to some of the music which I have no clue at all, even a single meaning of what it is being sung. For instance Ilocano’s Abalayan. I don’t know the meaning of the song but the beating and melody seems nice and it is an ideal song for a dance. Another example is the recent song Hawa Kamay. Well, at first, it sounds like “How Come I”. So I thought the song is about 'how come I love you' or 'how come I left you'. Well, after asking few friends about the meaning of the song, it turn out to be entirely different from what I thought it to be. Sometmes, I tried to use my analysis skill but manyt times disastrous.

But the movie is little different from music. We can watch a foreign movie and still we can somehow make it out what it really mean. We saw the action of the actors. Sometimes we can be very accurate and sometimes not.

The similarity between Double Trouble and Dobol Trobol is that it is basically a comedy movie. While Double Trouble is little bit violence unlike Dobol Trobol. I observed that Dobol Trobol is more on the family issue. As expected, Vic Sotto and Dolphy make lots of hilarious comedy scenes. Now the problem with me is that I don’t have clear idea about the conflict of Dolphy and his wife. I am sure it is bad enough to separate from one another. At the same time I am not intended to learn what the problem was, I rather keep that way for it is Dolphy family issue. There must be many families like Dolphy’s family and I will not stick-my-nose-in with other family issue which is private. However, if I am consulted, I must do what I can to help them solve their problem. It is good for a clergy and pastor to watch movie or TV serials beacuse most of the current issues of the community or nation usually reflected in such medias. Pastors and clergy are called to serve the people - community. In order to know them is to identify with them closely. Dobol Trobol is just one movie that reflect many trouble families in the community.

The story ended somehow in romantic note. When I came to Philippines, I tried to learn few important words that include Mahalkita, Mahalna mahalkita! In fact Dolphy loved his wife so much still. I heard him saying those words when he was asked by his daughter the night before her birthday. The movie is a mixture of humor and love.

STUDYING THE BIBLE BY STUDYING CULTURAL MAPS

                                                                 (Matthew 8: 5-13)
Words selected
Centurion
Authority
Centurion’s servant
Astonished
Faith
Kingdom of heaven
Deserve
Truth
Words with social significance
Centurion
Faith
Kingdom of heaven
SOCIAL ANALYSIS
Description
Centurion: The captain of the 100 (100 Soldiers in Roman Army). Undoubtedly, he was a high ranking officer. From his own description, he was a man with authority and has servants under him. By any standard, he was not just a mere Roman soldier.
Faith: Something we believe in, something we hold together, something we see by our inner eyes, something we are sure of without really seeing it, something we claim we have, something that give us hope and courage to go on.
Kingdom of heaven: Some believe it to be a peaceful state of life here on earth; some believe to be an eschatological celestial kingdom. Despite the differences in ones view, yet everyone will agree to the fact that kingdom of heaven is a peaceful and not much suffering or no suffering at all. Something better than the present corrupted society we have today.
History
Centurion: He was a certainly not a Jews. The main responsibility of the centurion was to train legionaries and failing to do so will amount to punishment. It said that they were usually strict and harsh. It took long time to become a centurion and they have to serve at least 16 (Sixteen) years as soldiers and need many recommendations from their superior. Certainly, life must have been comfortable for them. He can command soldiers and even has an authority to award capital punishment to the erring soldiers.
Faith: The term came from Greek word pistis (pistis) and was referring to allegiance given to Caesar, Roman Emperor. They considered their Emperor as god or at least demi-god. In order to become a Roman citizen, one has to declare their pistis in the Roman Emperor. It was Jesus, who shifts such allegiance to Yahweh.
Kingdom of heaven: This Hebrew concept of the promised Messiah establishing His kingdom, liberating His people from the power of the gentile and enemies. Probably this concept much has born in search of bringing hope for the captive Israelites in the foreign land. The issue that brought forth this kingdom was of the land or territory. We find such interpretation during Crusaders.
Knowledge
Centurion: Centurion was a man with authority. He represents Roman’s authority. But somehow, he got courage to approach Jesus with a concern for servant who was in terrible sickness. No doubt, there much have been a rich Jewish people those days with their servants dying of sickness. Interestingly, no Jews came up with such request for their servants. This particular centurion in Matthew 8 must be the same one mentioned by Dr. Luke in his gospel (Luke 7). Though many Roman officers are harsh, there must have been few Roman officers who were god fearing. Aside from his concern for the servant, we can see his humbleness.
Faith: The faith of Roman officer not only astonished Jesus but also create a challenge for the Jews. The Jews were exclusive by nature and when Jesus sent his 70 disciples for evangelism, there is a record that they were not suppose to entered any other house except Jews. This is an indication of the exclusiveness of the Jewish people.
Kingdom of heaven: Another exclusive view of the Jews and Christian. The Jews hope for the dramatic realization of the kingdom of heaven by the promised Messiah. Some Christians believed and anticipate the eschatological celestial reality to be realize soon when Jesus comes back. Still many Christian believed that Christ’s kingdom of heaven is already with us and we have to bring realization to the people by making all our effort to bring peace, justice and love to the humankind.
MODELS
To bring Centurion’s faith and concern for his servant, his little or big act of humility and Jesus astonishment and acceptance of his faith and further opening the kingdom of heaven for the ‘unlikely people’ is a great lesson. The idea of exclusiveness was defeated here by Jesus. His grace and love flows to everyone. Jesus’ acceptance oh his plea is an acceptance of all nation whosoever come to him will receive it.
WHAT RELEVANT TEACHING OR CHALLENGE DOES MY READING OFFER?
The people in power are usually individualistic and self-centered or selfish. The story is a direct confrontation to our social reality today. While, we could hardly find any officers or “public servants” whom we have elected come when are in need. In the present context, the story seems to glorify our officers, especially politicians in particular. However, some politicians do as this centurion did for his servant. Now, the question we need to us ourselves is ‘are we have enough faith to have concern even for others who are less fortunate like centurion’s faith that took him to Jesus?

5 August Bible Study Method and Curr. May be, all of us thought Jesus is purely divine and in no way can we identify with Him! But Jesus was a fully human while He was on this earth. Are we making a distance by ourselves with Jesus? But I am sure Jesus is always close by us!

About parable! Parable, in the first century was not suppose to interpret by the one who is telling. It has to be interpret by the audience in their own meaningful way. It is like a joke, when we explain a joke, it is not funny anymore and likely people will laugh out of pitiness for the joker. Having said this, I am not trying to eqaut parable and joke, but it works the same way jokes work. So there can be many interpretation for one parable.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://jaojiantheology.blogspot.com/2008/08/5-august-bible-study-method-and-curr.html' title='5 August Bible Study Method and Curr. She came every year to teach Creative Liturgy. Though I have seen her several times but this was the first time she came to our class to teach us on how congregation can actively participate in the worship.

She reminds me of one church I used to attend while doing my B.Th at Kerala, South India. It was an Independent Baptist Church in small locality called Chathanoor. There, we do something like biblio-drama but in different way. Of course we started with singing malayalam songs. One of the most interesting experience I had was the clapping of hands. As the song slowly picking up the rythm, our clapping also intensified and wooow by the end of the song, we were singing and clapping like a "bullet train". It was very fast and if you are not strong enough, clapping the whole song through was a challenging task. Now, after the songs, Pastor will pray first than anyone in the congregation, male or female, boys or girls, youth or old, local or international, will follow in prayer one by one as the Spirit lead us. About 4 - 5 peoples will pray. After the prayer was the testimony time. We have good numbers of members sharing their testimonies. Some were very interesting while some are not that interesting.

I thought Dr. Anna taught us something similar in the class like the church in small chathanoor baptist church. But she taught us something new and interesting.

We were divided into 6 different groups and allow us to come up with an expression with our body movement for the Lord's prayer. Though we fumble here and there, I think, we did well in the class. The whole point I am trying to learn from this activity is freedom of the spirit to express our prayer. While, my current church has few "deaf and dumb" members. So I thought this should helps me immediatly! She also taught us how to bring changes in the tradtional concept of Father God and heaven. This can be done through biblio-drama. For instance, we always look up or lift our hands to the skyward while referring to Father in heaven. Now instead of looking up or lifting hands to the skyward, looking around, lifting the hands of someone next to us, etcetera etcetera will bring something change to the atmosphere of the congregation. People will immediatly react to that. Reaction means effective. God is in us and among us then why should we look just to the skyward? This is just a tips of an iceberg! I don't think there should be rules or principles for liturgy to be creative but it is all about freedom of expression which convey the message best to God and to one another.

Injianmei khatni karaengmei

Ram kaguaina mei kandi khou nai bam mei guai hei peisa (coin) kum mei rana de. Young lovers walking holding hands, good numbers of people are just doing “window shopping” (including me), salesperson never get tire of “Hello sirs/hello madams”, a full packed at Jollybee but empty coffee shop! and there is a sign near the cinema theater "Worship service every Sunday at 10 am at movie theater 4! Etcetera etcetera.
There are few places in Asia known for the shopping malls, namely Bangkok, Singapore, and Hong Kong. But the whole Philippines can be considered as a shopping mall! Everywhere in the Philippine is Bangkok, Singapore and Hong Kong. It is like “All in One” package. The intriguing facts about the shopping mall is that people feels good being at mall, have you heard any fighting in the mall? Hardly! It inspire people to visit again and again, it motivate people to earn more money, everybody love to go to the mall! Now, if we have to relate such reality with the church life, there is something good about mall. I wonder what will be the answer if we ask a common people who has money this question, “where do you want to go - Mall or Church on Sunday?” Here, I am not trying to demonize the mall but I am trying to point the reality of human inclination to the practical reality. The church at the shopping mall is a very interesting proposition. There should be “mall effect” for today church. Shopping mall is inspiring in so many ways. For instance, when we saw something nice, we make all efforts to buy that thing. Even if we can’t buy, still it give some hope that one day, sooner or later, we will get it. Sometime, it is like the parable in the Bible that a person sold everything to buy the hidden treasure!
It will be interesting for a mission worker to incorporate the mall strategy and theology. We get maximum people in the mall than any other place.

Church’s ministry to the context

The life of the church in North East India and Chin regions of Myanmar are similar in many ways. First and foremost, most churches belong to Baptist denominations and they subscribed to all the fundamental beliefs and practices of the Baptist all over the world.
Many of the Baptist churches are not susceptible to the changes. The churches (including other denominations) tend to draw lines between the social issues and church issues. For instances, the churches did not join rally or protest gathering. Though pastors and church members join the rally and protest but as an individual. Another feature of the churches is that we draw a big line between the church and politics. The church did not endorse any candidates or political parties. So, the churches are keeping themselves away from anything which is political in nature. However, churches face enormous challenges and persecutions. The churches are severely affected by political activities. For instance, if there is a rebellious activity in a particular place, the government or military will always target the church; accusing the church harbor the rebels. The church stood there voiceless; for if they utter a word, it does more harm than good. Militarization, poverty, drugs, human rights violation, migration is the context of the churches in North East India and Myanmar. The church’s ministry should be addressing to all these issues. It is not easier for the church to have a meaningful dialogue with the military. A protest and rally against military is suicidal. The world has witnessed the recent event in the Myanmar. So, one must be tactful in dealing with sensitive issue like military. If rally and protest are not working, there must be other way to deal. Poverty and drugs are two issues that bring so much harm to the community. Additions to these issues are the issues of human rights violation and migration. People cease to believe in their own people; helpless and hopeless is a harsh word but not far from the truth. People are not confident in the midst of these challenges.
The church must help the community in rediscovering and reviving the confidence of the people. The church is called to lift the people up and provide hope for the mass. Can the church do the task? The transforming power of God is the sources of strength for the church to accomplish this task through the working of the Holy Spirit.

Critical Asian Principle (CAP) as fundamental cornerstone for doing theology in Asia

The Critical Asian Principle or in short CAP is something Union Theological Seminary, Philippines can be proud of. It was formulated and introduced by our former president Emerito P. Nacpil. Since the inception and eventually adopted as a bases doing theology in Asia, CAP has been playing a vital role in unearthing the richness of Asian thought in doing theology. The primary concerns of the CAP is realizing each day in many of the Asian nations i.e. promoting theological education which is basically Asian and its distinctiveness in reaching and doing theology to the various communities in Asia.
Our uniqueness as Asian; our cultures, religious needs and questions, our experiences etcetera etcetera, are distinct from the thoughts and experiences of other parts of the world. Our distinctiveness and uniqueness calls for such principle as CAP. So that it will be able to address the issues and concerns of the Asian community effectively. Having subscribed to CAP doesn’t necessarily exclude other theologies or thoughts as many opined. Rather it is given priority to the CAP in such a way that we have a platform of our own to do theology which eventually is helpful to us. It is beyond doubt that some of the ideas and thoughts, especially from those developed nations are not applicable here in the Asian context. Written from different perspectives and world, it failed to address the issues and concern of our Asian community in many ways. Only if our forefather could see CAP two hundred years ago, it would have been a different story altogether now. CAP is daring endeavor! We decided to stand neck and neck with the ‘already popular-and-settled’ theologies of the developed nations. We are second to none; for God created us equally. Who is more? And who is less? We can’t expect others to go ahead of us all the time. Or are we always expecting developed nations to give us new ideas and thoughts. Many of us will comfortably sit back and wait for others to come up. We have inferiority complex in doing theology, thinking that we are no comparison to others. CAP is a stepping stone to break away from such feeble mind, which is deeply implanted by others and sometime by ourselves. Now is the time to work earnestly, laying the foundation for the generation to come.
The strength lies in the rich experiences of our people. Asian are basically religious people. We can observe from the fact that all the major religions we know today are born from Asia. It is an indication that Asians are religious by nature.
Due to ignorance of our learned people, we don’t have enough scholars and literature to do theology in compare to the myriads of western scholarships. The mindsets of the students also post a huge challenge for the CAP. Western ideas and thoughts are readily accepted without much debate or sometimes we debate over western thoughts upon western thought. In one way, it is the weakness of CAP in her inability to capture the mindsets of the students.

The role of Ruth and Naomi in redeeming story of God

Ruth, Naomi, and Orpah (Ruth 1)
The story of Naomi and her family was a tragedy. They try to escape famine in their land and moved to Moab. It is like one is running away from a lion just meet tiger at the other end. All the men of the family died there in a strange land. They came to Moab so that they might live but instead they died there except Naomi. It is quit natural that everyone tries to escape from the death, especially by hunger. We make all possible efforts to keep ourselves alive. It must have been hard for the Elimelech family to stay in the land. But God has a plan for moving down there.
When all husbands were died, Naomi has not much option than to send them back to their respective families. Orpah left because Naomi insists her to go back to her parents. But Ruth determined to stay with Naomi and we are started to realize the purpose of Elimelech going down to Moab. If they did not go down, certainly, they will not find Ruth, a Moabite woman. If we take the story to our time, Ruth possibly is a Muslim lady from wherever the Muslims are most. Only few women’s names are written in the genealogy of Jesus (Matthew 1) and one among them was Ruth, a Moabite. God’s redeeming acts can be happen to whosoever He chooses. Ruth was the God’s champion in the narrative. She holds the genealogy of the promised Messiah unbroken.
Naomi also played a crucial part in this narrative. God used her to linked Ruth to the lineage of Jesus Christ. She shouldered the whole responsibilities of the family and going back to the land Israel with Ruth. Her decision to go back to her homeland was a God’s redeeming act.

Workers in the vineyard (Matthew 20: 1-16)

We are all invited to work in His field through out the history. The wage he promises us is the same – the kingdom of heaven. No matter at what point of time one was called or one is called or one will be call, it is for the kingdom of heaven, nothing more nothing less. The parable conveys the message of equal blessing upon all His workers.
Another truth revealed in this parable is unceasing invitation of God for workers. He calls for workers, regardless of the times of the day. He wants everyone to work in His vineyard at whatever point of time when He calls us. Interestingly, tools will be provided when we reach the field. It also implies that He is not looking for professionals and expertise in the vineyard. He calls everyone whosoever is standing at the market place. Standing in the market place implies that one is looking for job. So we need to be ready looking for Him to pass by. If He is not, we go His house and enquire about it, if there is any vacancy. Once we are accepted, he didn’t ask for much paper work, He expects us to be in the field soon after His invitation.
When the kingdom of heaven prevails: love, peace and justice shall flourish. When the kingdom’s value is in working, everyone gets enough and there will be no starvation. Can this be true to us today? Now, if one is not in the periphery of the kingdom or kingdom’s territory, such kingdom values are not meant anything to them. Therefore, it is an invitation by the Master of the vineyard to join the kingdom; subscribed to her values, so that all may enjoy the just and righteous wages of the Master. In the kingdom of heaven, no one shall deprive of their right to work and fair wages and the good Master will make sure to it that everyone gets the job. We continue to strive for this reality.
One must also consider the terms and conditions to which one is called. The workers who came earlier had a complaint against the good Owner, because they did not followed the terms and condition. So one must understand the term and condition before one start working.

Tenants in the Vineyard (Matthew 21: 33-45, Mark 12: 1-12, and Luke 20: 9-19)

No doubt, the parable is subversive and we can see that from the reactions of the chief priest and Pharisees.
The parable posts a great challenge and need careful study. In most cases today, it was the owner who is manipulating the poor tenants. The tenants are the one who are tossing and twisting by landlord. Now, certainly we are not identifying with errant tenants in the vineyard. The great challenge here for a pastor is “where can we fit in to the parable?” We are neither tenants nor the owner. Who are we then? We are other tenants who will be given the vineyard by the Landlord! How can we draw meaning and purpose from such subversive parable is a great challenge. In the present world, the resemblances we can observe with that of the errant tenants are our politicians and those big business people who are money mongers. In some way, they are entrusted with responsibilities by God. In Jesus times, chief priest and Pharisees were the “tenants”; entrusted to take care of God’s people – His vineyard. They killed God’s servants – the prophets; who were sent to take account of their works. Jesus in this parable was foretelling about His death and they (those tenants) are going to be part of that scheme. When Jesus was telling the truth, chief priest and Pharisees sense the problem. It is happening in our very world today. Whosoever is speaking the truth, the “tenants” will make sure to it that it will not go any further. But the truth can’t be withheld forever.
This parable is also a hope for those peasants who have been dispossessed of their land. Jesus said, “The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.” Though Jesus did not affirmed outrightly to the answer of the disciple, somehow He agreed to some extent. In what manner God will deal with them is not certain but one thing we can be sure of is that ‘they will be remove’ and justice will be done. The same privilege will be given to others who will “bring forth the fruits thereof”. We will bring forth the fruits thereof and give what is due to the Landlord and warmly welcome those servants send by the Landlord and will honor His son to the utmost high.

God's redeeming act from the very beginning

God’s redeeming act
(Genesis 3)
This is the story of how humanity falls from the original state of being; from the splendor and privileges of being created manually by Lord God! (Assuming I am doing the Bible study now among women). Certainly, their were in a state of innocence, enjoyment, happy and probably dancing around or running around the trees like the actor and actress of Indian Movies. Everything was going well; family (man and wife) has no quarrelling, no fights over who is greater or who is lesser, and no worries for their foods and clothing.
Now the story is about to begin. Somebody got jealous and wants to bring some troubles to the couple. This somebody is the “Serpent”, the most subtle creature of all creatures. It is a matter of investigation “who is this Serpent?” In the Book of Revelation, the writer called “the old Serpent”, probably referring to the Serpent of Genesis 3. But In others parts of the Bible, Serpent was quite helpful. For instance, Moses had to lift up “serpent” and whoever looks upon the serpent did not die. So whether Serpent is intrinsically evil or is the serpent was possessed by some kind of spirit remain at large. However, the story said, the serpent beguiled the couple, wife first and then husband. They were together and probably ate the fruit almost at the same time. They’ve just eaten the fruit and new knowledge came. They are not innocence anymore, in fact wiser little; for they now know that they are naked. Indeed serpent also telling some kind of truth but the truth leads them to their fall. They were in deep trouble and could not meet their Master for two good reasons. First, they disobey God and listen to the wrong voice, and secondly, they feel ashamed because they realized that they were naked.
So, they need to do something to get out of it. They tried to sew cloths for themselves so that they can cover their shame but failed. They have done something they were not supposed to do – eating the forbidden fruit. Certainly, the omniscient God knows what they have committed yet He came to have fellowship with them. As we are all accountable to whatever we did, Adam and Eve also accountable for what they have done. But God in His redeeming love did not cease to care for us (the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them); despite our sins and mistakes. God punishment was accompanied by hope. He didn’t punish us and left us all alone. He gives hope (her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel). God gave a hope through Eve that “her seed” will bruised the head of devil and devil will “bruise his heel”. This is referring to Jesus Christ – born of a woman (as promise to Eve). The devil thought that he had Him while Jesus was on the cross but on the third day He resurrected from the dead and that was a crushing blow to the devil’s head.
This is the story of how humankind was fallen from the original state. In this story, God unfold His redeeming plan for the fallen humankind.

Poverty and Youth - BTR for Campus and Youth Ministry

Poverty and Youth

Thousands of young people graduated from universities and colleges every year. After huge investment to get the degree, no surprise; no job around! The irony of the present world is that if you are graduated from ‘not so popular’ universities or colleges, job is hard to come by. Those who can afford to attend good schools can afford to attend good universities and end up in big corporate office. While on other hand poor can’t afford to attend good school so also can’t go to good universities and ended up in corner of your house and content with the sari-sari store. Worst, one will end up driving ‘padi-cab’ or ‘tri-cycle’. While that’s something! Still, there is possibility of ‘forever hunting’ job. This world is not a ‘poor-friendly’ world.
Who is to be blame for all these mess? Politician? Our forefather? Who? Now it is difficult to point out to a single cause, responsible for this present situation of poverty. It is like an unwelcome guest. We blame the Government and politicians and most of the time we are right but are they the only factors for all these mess? I believed there must be several factors aside from them, such as selling our agricultural for setting up industries. There are chain effects on such transaction. Some are positives and some negatives. Aside from leaving the hardworking culture, it leaves ones to indulge in a kind of lifestyle which is not at all fitted.
Where can we go and what can we do? Many are not lucky enough to get a chance to get a job even at the workplace where it is underpaid. Leaving aside those graduates, what about the drop-out youth and those youth who never has a chance to study. Our definition of youth is not limited to just educated young people, it encompass all young people regardless of what they have achieve or not, or do they attend church or not, or affiliated with other religious practice for that matter. Now, we are living in such hostile world and our future looks bleak! It is like unfinished subjects that need to be clear before ones get graduation. In India, we called it “back subjects”. The problem of “back subject” is that it resurfaced before we get graduation and many times, hold us back from graduating. Unless we deal with the back subject, we can’t go further. These unemployment and poverty hinder us from going further and it doesn’t help us to build a better future. Unless it is treated soon, it will do much harm to our future like a cancerous cell spreading rapidly and destroying all the good cell.
What really can we do with our degrees and diplomas? If one doesn’t have any background – economically, politically, socially etcetera etcetera, one is bound to face the music. Our background is not build in a day. In most of the cases, it is determined by ones’ birth. If we are born in a rich family, we have all the necessary backgrounds for any kinds of job. Only few poor youth become successful; from scraps to something well established. But the larger numbers remain jobless. Many have to push beyond their limit. The genius and talented youth, though poor somehow has no problem in getting job and get rich but such are just a micro fraction of the millions. Though some could make it, there remain a large numbers of youth; struggling to get even a job where it is underpaid. The business owners hardly count how much and how hard we invested to get those degrees and diplomas. Their main interests are basically on how much they can get out of us or from us. Profit maximization has always been the core value of any business. There is little or very negligible amount of interest given to the ‘wellness’ of the workers.
Our life will go on whether we’ve got job or not! Population is still exploding, poor is making more poor people while few rich could makes just few rich. Though I am not an expert in statistic, I am sure the ratio is wide, very wide. Who can change it? Partially the answer lies in the youth of today.
The following will help us in solving our problem of poverty
1) Healing. The word healing has been inappropriately imply by many to just healing of physical health, specifically to human kind. There are only few who realized the fact that our land has been wounded by human greediness. One wise man from Northern Philippines once said, “We don’t own the land; the land own us” and I need to be corrected if I am wrong. The same wise person further validates the statement by saying “because the land outlived us. The land has been here long before us”. Once our land was fertile but she has been wounded, abused, and manipulate to an extent that she could not bear fruit anymore. Once our land is heal, everyone will have food to eat and cloths to wear.
2) Change in attitude: Change of attitude is needed from all sections of the society. The Government need to change her attitude toward the poor and marginalized. The principle of ‘pro-people’ should be translated into something concrete and practical. The nation needs to defense her territory but at the same time need to look into her people the more. Government officials need to look beyond their individualism. In the absence of genuine concern for others corruption exists. Business owners and the rich needs to change their attitude of making profits at the cost of others. The poor also need to change our attitude. We must step out from the inferiority complex, from the timid mind; break free from the mentality of being under.
3) Reforming the society: To bring reformation is not a mean task. The history is the witness to what it took to reformed something. The Protestant church has been down this road when Martin Luther stood against “indulgence”. The church in those days was so much given to selling “indulgence” to raise money for the ongoing construction of St. Peter's Basilica. The point here is that there were so much injustices and corruptions happening and Martin Luther was brave enough to speak against it not because he don’t want but because it was not just and people were enticing to false hope. There is an urgent call for men and women to the challenges we are facing today. Can we expect our Government? May be! Our Politician? May be! Our “age-old” lola and lolo? May be not! We are not sure of them but we can be sure of ourselves; young, full of life and ideas, not yet influence by the seeds of corruption, full of dreams and aspiration for the better future.
4) Rediscovering self: Because of the harsh reality of poverty, we lost even what we have in us. God created us with a definite purpose and I don’t believe He can do anything useless. God forbid. Further, every one of us has various gifts and talents. Now, the question is “how such a purposeful and talented/gifted people go hungry?” I don’t say because we are lazy! Such is the extent that poverty took us. Since, we don’t have an opportunity and no one is willing to give us a try, our talents and gifts are draining away each day in the street. Who will hire us, when our Resume doesn’t mentioned our work experience, except one is really smart! Because of such requirement, we started to mention many things in our Resume just to impress the interviewer. We are not wholly to be blame for that? “They” make us do that. Sometimes, we are not sure of what we are really good at! By rediscovering ourselves, our sense of direction will be clear. If we know ourselves better and able to excel in what we are good at, due recognition is sure to come.

Can we imagine God is delighted while His people and His whole creation are languishing in this harsh reality of poverty? No! God forbid. In fact Jesus, Son of God, was sent for the poor and sick. One might say, Bible is talking about in spiritual term and many Christian romanticize sufferings and poor as something to be cherish as one good Christian should be. They sound like escapist to me! Of course we have to do something so that poor will have food to eat and clothes to wear, so that sick will have doctors to attend and medicine to heal their sickness. God works this way. There are only few in this world who will sincerely say “thank you Lord” in the midst of such cruelty of poverty. Matthew 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. One way of looking at this portion that those who called “Lord, Lord” and not really mean it; they will not enter the kingdom of heaven. If we are really thankful to God for being in such poverty, nothing further I can go. But when our heart is really yearning for a decent food and clothes and we don’t have it, we should be addressing God in right way that is true to our heart for God sees our heart and not out lips. There are several passages in the Scripture telling us that caring for the poor is the very intrinsic nature of God:
Defender of the fatherless and widows (Deut. 10:18; Psalm 10:16-18; 40:17, 68:5; Jeremiah 22:16)
Protector of the poor (Psalm 12:5)
Rescuer of the poor (I Sam 2:8, Psalm 35:10, 72:4, 12-14, Isaiah 19:20, Jeremiah 20:13)
Provider of the poor (Psalm 68:10, 146:7, Isaiah 41:17)
Savior of the poor (Psalm 34:6, 109:31)
Refuge of the poor (Psalm 14:6, Isaiah 25:4).
Human being sometimes lie if not always. But God can never be lie. God is not like our Government or politicians who make lots of promises and never happen and even if happen, it has to be near the election. We have a numerous reference in the Scripture where poor or poverty is the agenda of God.

Now going further, is it sin to be wealthy? Or is it dreaming of becoming rich a sin? Many times friends and well wishers will simply assert “depends”! Well, my answer is yes and no. Yes, IF our motives of getting rich is to get ride of our neighbors, friends, or our enemy. Yes, IF our focus is shifting from God to money; when our primary becomes our secondary. No, IF our motives are have better life, not necessarily competing our neighbor. No, if our motives are to build up our people and the community. No, IF our conscience if free from guilt in having wealth. No, IF the way of accumulating wealth is fare and not at the cost of others dearly. When we are in poverty, other vices also come along such as robbery, killing, and hatred etcetera etcetera.
Now, how do we start these processes of healing, change of attitude, reforming and rediscovering our self? It must begin from us, the youth. Bible say in II Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. {Which...: Heb. upon whom my name is called}
First we called upon the name of the Lord, affirming His Lordship over us, identifying in His kingdom. Secondly, humbling ourselves before Him. It is not enough to humble before God, it is easy in compare to our fellowmen. Humbling ourselves means to our fellowmen too. Thirdly, pray! We thought “calling upon His name” and “humbling ourselves” happen only during prayer! God is telling us to call upon His name and be humble to Him and to our fellowmen as an attitude of our lives. John R. Rice, evangelist and founder of Sword of the Lord ministry, once said “prayer moves the hands of God”. What a powerful way to move the hands of our God. Fourthly, seek my face, meaning seeking God. We lost focus on God when so many things are to be done. We need to seek His face, meaning seeking His will, being aware of His presence in all circumstances. Now, we thought, we’ve done enough to call upon His attention! We still lack one more thing and this is very important. “Turn from their wicked ways”, we can call, humble, pray and even seek His face but we also need to do away with our old sinful ways. We have to renounce our wicked ways. Old habits are hard to die! But if we are determine to bring change and want to step in to the future with hope, we must comply with the conditions the Scripture has laid down for us. If we do so, God said, “then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. So be it.

son of god

why Romans killed Jesus? Why Paul was killed by the Romans? Why others early Christian were persecuted and killed?

The straight forward answer is "they preached Christ Jesus - Son of God"

What is wrong in preaching Jesus Christ as Son of God? Do they hate the title or others don't want Jesus to be the Son of God?

Here is the vital information from the budding New Testament scholar Prof. Revelation Velunta of Union Theological Seminary. This is what I have learned from his class on 16th July 2008.
First, we have to understand few terms which were very important in those days.
1) Basileus a Greek term for "king". The Romans considered their king - Caesar as son of god or in other word they believed their emperor were descendant of god.
2) Basileia a Greek term for "kingdom". It was a term used by the Romans for the Roman Empire.
3) Pistis a Greek term for "faith" or "believe". In other to be member of the kingdom, one has to confess his faith in the emperor.
Now, all these terms were used by early Christians, saying Jesus is the Son of God and not the Caesar. Further, they also preached about the kingdom which is contrary to Roman Empire. The story in the Genesis says:
Genesis 11:1-9 – "And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. {Language: Heb. lip.} {Speech: Heb. words} 2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. {from...: or, eastward} 3 And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter. {They said...: Heb. a man said to his neighbour} {burn...: Heb. burn them to a burning} 4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. 5 And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded. 6 And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. 7 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. 8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. 9 Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth. {Babel: that is, Confusion}"

Before I go further, I affirmed my belief that this story was absolutly true and it happened at some point of time in the human history and not just a story to make things easy. There was one language and one speech! And surprisingly, the people of the “whole earth” was there (may be not much those days and likely no population problem). We will not be far from truth if we say that we saw our great great great forefather were sipping tea/wine together; planning and drawing the tower plan with the limited tools they had. Indiano, Filipino, Koreano, Myanmaro, Americano etcetera etcetera were all there. Everyone was there, working together planning together. Is this the same picture the ecumenical movement is trying to draw? Now, it is not surprising to note that they were trying to make a name for themselves because many people are doing the same thing even today. It is also worth noting that one of their intentions of building the tower was, “lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth”. They were trying to build something that will keep them together from dispersing to all direction of the earth. Then the question is Is God hate unity or oneness? God forbid! We should live together as one family as one humankind. The problem with this plan is that they broke away from dependence on God. If we come together for good and for God, certainly God will allow it. But if such union or oneness will bring dishonor or will lead us to the thinking that we can do anything even without God’s help, then God will disperse the same way He did in the olden days.
There can be second Tower of Babel, if there is a second Adam. For whatever reason, God could not allow the building of the tower to continue, which I believe to be the symbol of oneness and power. But if we can ponder our thoughts and reason why God did not allowed, we might come up with an answer and rectify the past mistake. Certainly, the second tower of Babel should be better and superior.
Or if physical unity is not possible, we might have to explore from the spiritual aspects.

The Parable of Jesus by Prof. Velunta

How does one get crucified for telling Parables?Introduction

Two very important reminders: First, If there is one fact we are perfectly sure about Jesus of Nazareth, it is that he was crucified by order of the Roman Prefect, Pontius Pilate, in the mid-30's CE for allegedly being "King of the Jews." And we don't need the Bible to confirm this. Two historians, the Jewish Josephus and the Roman Tacitus, attest to the “pernicious” superstition called Christianity and its crucified and supposedly risen leader. Second, if there is one thing most scholars agree about Jesus is that he was a storyteller; that he taught in parables (like the many rabbis of his time). And his followers remembered and we have many of his stories in the gospels we now call Mark, Matthew and Luke. The key question we hope to answer this term is one which has bothered many for centuries: If Jesus were a teacher of heavenly, spiritual truths then why was he executed as a political subversive between two social bandits or freedom fighters (lestes in Greek)? It appears that Jerusalem elites collaborated with their Roman overlords to get rid of Jesus because he was a threat to their political and economic Interests? How do we reconcile the teacher with the subversive? How does one get crucified for telling stories? To answer this question, we need to try to construct the context of those so-called stories that may have gotten Jesus killed. If parables offer glimpses of everyday life in first-century Palestine, they also infer the larger whole of which those glimpses are part. We cannot understand the parables without first attending to the social reality they imply. For this task, we have Josephus, rabbinic and Roman sources. We also have anthropologists who do peasant studies. Then we have macro-sociologists' work on agrarian societies and aristocratic and bureaucratic empires. The World of Jesus’ ParablesSocial scientists map the contours of antiquity. These maps (like the maps we have in our cars) are but representations of reality. They help us understand the world of Jesus’ parables. Many of these scientists agree that the introduction of the plow (yes, the lowly “araro”) ushered the dawn of the domestication of animals for agricultural use, the eventual settlement of cultivators in villages, and the rise of an exploiter class. Agrarian societies dominated human life from about 3000 BCE to the advent of the industrial revolution in 1800 CE. One consequence of this social evolution was institutionalized bureaucracy. In the beginning there were cultivators and armed nomads who preyed on the cultivators by destroying their settlements and plundering their goods. Eventually, in order to save their settlements, the cultivators—instead of fighting—offered a portion of their produce to the nomads as bribe. The bribe eventually became tribute. The nomads soon discover they could live off the produce of villages. Warfare and plunder became their way of life and bureaucracy is its legitimization. Financial bureaucrats made sure that wealth remained in the hands of the few and the military made sure more not less came in. The elite had to legitimize exploitation through education, record-keeping (of debts particularly) and religion. The economy was based on redistribution of wealth through tribute and other forms of enforced obligations whose effect was to leave peasants at subsistence levels while urban elites lived in luxury. Sociologists also have remarked that agrarian societies have no history. Trans-historically or cross-culturally, if you see one, you've seen them all.The world of ancient Palestine may be represented by the following levels (and one can argue that these tiers are as true today as they were then).High-level elite, power players-1-2%Retainers (agents of control), 5-7%Merchants, peddlers, barter, 5%Artisans, manual-skilled laborers, 3-7%Peasants, 70-80%Unclean, despised trade, nothing to sell but bodies,5%Expendables, excess children of peasant farmers sent away asDay laborers and beggars, 10-15%This is the world of Jesus' parables. Jesus’ parables were not earthly stories about heavenly things; rather, they were earthy stories about heavy things: the reality of empire, of colonial rule, the violence of poverty and oppression, and the dispossessed’s collective longing for God’s intervention.Jesus’ parables—stories that disclosed the structures of empire, evil and greed during his time and offered glimpses of God’s reign breaking through via the struggles of the dispossessed—were, most probably, the reason he got executed. Yes, telling parables can get one killed.

Youth against corruption

The role of Youth against the rampant corruptions in the nation
"The youth are the pillar of the nation"
We feel good to hear something good, something nice about our nation. For instance, the whole nation celebrates when Manny Pacquiao won the bout against his opponent. Though my stay in this country is just over two years and few months, it is long enough to immersed myself to the culture and people as much as I could, knowing that I don’t have all my life to experience! Now, I have so many pare and mare. Growing old with them allows me to observe many aspects of their lives. All my pare and mare are from ordinary class and I strongly believe that rest of the people are not so much differ from them. All mga kaibigan are generous and very considerate! I have been wondering how such corruption creep in to the Filipino people. "Economy our friend and foe at the sametime"
The forum on “Corruption” on 9th July 2008 at Salakot, UTS Dasmarinas, answers some of my wondering questions. The corruptions creep in through Spaniard and ‘pass it on’ down to the present time. This is simply because, those who enjoy the luxury life out of the corruptions don’t want to give up their comforts. They can’t compromise their luxury life for the truth. Now, it is deeply implanted in the heart of many and becomes a norm now. In India too, corruptions are rampant and the gap between rich and poor are widening each passing day.

Now, the hope of the nation rest upon the youth of today.

One very good thing about youth is flexibility – flexibility for a change, courage to face challenges to tread the un-treaded path. However, young people will also tread the same path unless they are caution. The young people should be taught how to be nationalistic and embrace our rich cultural values. Our focus as a curriculum developer should try to rediscover the pre-colonial life. We can make use of the multimedia available today such as video, newspapers, radio, internet, fashion etcetera etcetera. “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it” (Pro. 6:22). If we could make our youth aware of the evilness of the corruptions and its consequences, our youth will not strive for the selfish ambition. A sense of community should develop among our youth and individualism has to be minimize if not eradicate.

4 july Ecumenics and Mission

What is the problem of Ecumenism?
Our discussion start with the word meaning of Oikos (household) or Oikomene (whole inhabitant of the world)
It was really a noble ambition to have ecumenical movement, trying to unite christian, regardless of their denominations. type='text'>3 July Pauline Theology

Today, our discussion was on anthropology according to Paul. Now the issue at this subject is that "was Paul influenced by Hebraic thought of anthropology or Greek's trichotomy? The Hedrew viewed mankind as a whole being (Thats what the presenter said, need to check it) and Greek thought mankind is composed of Body, Soul and Spirit. The confusion here with Paul is, what kind of view he was following?
The question?
Is there any doctrinal significance by such anthropological views of mankind? Certainly! There is a significance. We have body, souls and spirit. Our body is temporal, not necessarily sinful. Our souls are what it make us living. As our bodies need our souls to keep alive, our souls need a spirit. Now, you choose what kind of spirit! We have Holy Spirit to give us living spirit, that will teach us and guide us. There is also a spirit of the devils. So we need to discern, what kind of spirit is about us. I will elaborate more in the next entry.
01 july Is English universal language or imperialist language

Most of the Asian countries experieince colonialism and it affected the society to a great extend. For instance, most of our churches were still under the influences of our colonial master. The hymnals, liturgies, language, organisational setup and on and on. We are coming to the point that our very own culture are evil culture, a pagan culture or we are made to think that christianity has nothing to do with our culture, someting like leave it and forget it! Now, we will have crisis identity. Our coming generation will have any idea about our rich culture God has given us. Yes, there are some practices which are really need to do away but there are numerous practices which are far more nobler and better than our colonial master tought us.

Now, our colonial master used English (language) exclusively to exploit us. For many, English language is just simply a stark reminder of the colonialism. Now, the question is "Is English an universal language or Imperialist language?
For many of us, English is a language that bridge the gap of great language barrier. We can communicate with one another though we are from both end of the globe. In such situation it is never an imperialist language. However, if English is use intentionally to show our dominionship on others, any langauge for that matter. It is wrong to use language that way.

01 July Bible Study Method

What is the objective of the CE?
Many of our friends gave their answer of which some are close while some are not that close! The primary objective of the CE according to Prof. Liz, is 'proclaiming the reign of God/Kingdom of God'. The kingdom of God is realized when there is peace, justice, and love. This was the core message of Jesus while on earth.
The CE plays a vital role in carrying out this message. Therefore, developing a curriculum that will address human development, cultural development, and community developement is the need of the hour. There is an immense need develope a value system or rather reclaiming the our rich traditional value system. A value system which will eliminate individualism, capitalism, colonialism, oppression etcetera.

Assignment
Need analysis of the church (our local church), our community
Formulating vision and mission (project proposal)
Venue (such as camping, youth class, leadership training etc)

Chapel service

The sermon was on the account of Abraham trying to sacrifice his son Isaac as an act of obedience to God's demand.

The sermon was indeed a challenge to interprate how evil actions could possibly be a revelation. She was mentioning about Abraham, Sarah and Hagar as "love triangle". If I am not mistake, Abraham did not really love Hagar but instead it was Sarah who suggested the idea of sleeping with Hagar. If Abraham really love Hagar as he love Sarah, I have no problem in accepting the idea of "love triangle". Abraham was called faithful and father of all nations. But I observed Sarah as controlling her husband. I am wondering if Hagar and Ismael were not sent away, what possibly be the condition. Will they live happily with one another or there will be a fight always.

26 June Pauline Theology

The importance of Jerusalem Council of 48AD/CE

The council of Jerusalem Council mentioned in ACTS 15 prevented christianity from being two sect; namely the Jewish (Circumcision) and Non-Jewish (Uncircumcision) christianity. It is very important in the history of christianity in resolving the issue of circumcision and gentile christian. Paul took courage to present the issue to the leaders/elders/pillar of the christianity of that time-James (Jesus half brother?), Cephas (Peter) and John. It was the wonderful working of the Holy Spirit from falling apart in such infant stage.

The elders commissioned Paul to take the gospel to the non-Jewish and uncircumcise people. So, there is no reason to doubt about Paul teaching.

Another elements of the gospel of Jesus Christ is reaching to the poor. It was specifically mentioned the advice given to the Paul. One thing we can't miss about Paul is, he was a good funds collector. Concern for the poor has always been an integral part of the gospel work since its very beginning.

Here is possible chronology of Paul's life (the dates are approximate)

0 or 1 AD/CE--Paul's birth year at Tarsus, in the province of Cilicia

30 AD*-- Crucifixion of Jesus Christ

32 AD*-- Paul's conversion (Probably in his early 30s)

48/49* AD-- Jerusalem Council

49/50 AD -- Paul in Corinth (He stayed since winter until summar 51 for about 1 and half year)

52-55 AD -- Paul in Ephesus

55-56 or Spring of 57 AD -- Last stay in Macedonia & Greece; Journey to Jerusalem and his

                                                  Arrest; Taken prisoner to Rome

58-60 AD -- Two Years imprisonment in Rome

(There is also a view that Paul was released for little while before re-arrested)

60-64 AD -- Martyardom under Nero (For external source watch "Quo Vadis")

Aquatic Theology

Aquatic Theology

The term aquatic theology is refer to how water is related to theology. I didn’t borrow this term from anyone but the idea was inspired by Sis.Lizette Tapia Raquel and Professor George Buenaventura’s Geo Theology. Sis. Lizette suggested me soon after we revived the water pump at the farm that it will be interesting if I write a theological reflection on water. I must admit that I am not a careful writer and I hardly write anything except my term papers and exams. We will realize this fact while you read this reflection.

The background of aquatic theology
As part of the summer exposure program, we were to revive one water pump which was left unused for many several years. After several attempts, our hard labor finally paid off! Every one present there were excited to see the water gushing out from the old ‘seems-dead-already’ water pump.
Why we were so excited about the water pump! Actually we are not only excited about the success of the project itself, we were excited about the WATER. The equation is simple and plain why we felt so excited about the water. Water gives life to the plants, fish and vegetables and in turn they cater to the needs of mankind.
Biblically, water was there before we were there. By and large it is assumed by the biologists and other scientist that life began on the water. Of course it does not all of sudden pop up from water. God used water as a dais for all living creature to start exist.
This is introductory journey to the aquatic theology.

Water and women
Life does not begin in the women’s womb without the help of other entity. The sperms of male and female when meet each other then develop the fetus inside the womb. Though this explanation doesn’t have must of scientific terms and formula but a simple reminder to us of what we know already. It is not my attempt to give the detail of how child is conceives but I am trying to relate the truth about how water also acts the same way as that of our mother’s womb. She nourishes the life inside till it gives birth at the fullness of time. There is other entity, helping the water to give life. God in His infinite wisdom impregnated the water to give birth to all living creatures as He did to maiden Mary.
It is water who gave birth to many living creatures and the land feeds us. Everything comes from the water and it will go back to the water eventually. Water is our mother and land is our father and this is God’s own plan to sustain every living and non living things existed.

Water is the agent of God
Surely God can raise anything anywhere. But if anything comes out of anywhere, it will violate the natural law and there will be a chaos everywhere. So in the beginning, God made the living creature to bring forth and multiply ‘after his kind.’ We can’t imagine a cow give birth to a monkey! Unthinkable! I didn’t hear a modern science is trying to cross breed deer and tiger. So when God created a life, water plays a very crucial role as a woman carrying a baby in hr womb. Water is the body out of which all living creatures fine life in it. Water is necessary for the continuation of our existence. Remember! The four rivers watered the Eden garden. Without question we can assumed that God uses water to make fruitful, to multiply.

Water is the type of Jesus sacrificial blood
Water in various forms is use for cleaning dirt and stain, except for the vacuum cleaner and other dry cleaner machines. Every form of cleaning the dirt or stain requires water. The blood of Jesus Christ cleanses us from every dirt and stain of sin of our lives. No matter how imperfect the comparison might be yet water is strong picture of Jesus Christ sacrificial blood, a fine example every mankind can understand. Water symbolizes peace, fertility, healing and might!

Water and the community
Water enables the plants, fish and vegetables to have normal and healthy lives. Above all community needs water directly and indirectly. The community is beautifying by the surplus and efficiency of the water. There is peace and tranquility when our environment is healthy. The life of community is so much related to water.
Without water, every living being is withered away. Some living being feel the brunt immediately and some gradually. Eventually all will perish in wants of water.

Water and worship
Though water is very crucial and we will die without it yet it is not divine therefore, not God nor to be worship as divine being. We didn’t worship the womb of our mother or women for that matter though we revere. If it is the habit to worship anything that benefits the mankind, one may go ahead and worship but the divine worship belongs to God and Him alone. I am making a distinction between two worships here; divine worship, which is worship in totality, a complete devotion, a supreme. This worship is a veneration of our spirit, soul and body to the One, the Creator. It is like Jonathan Edwards’ ‘my utmost for His highest’.
Another worship is out of respect and love for being Almighty’s instrument in sustaining us. Respect, adoration, devotion are lower form of worship. When the degree of respect, love, adoration, devotion intensifies, it becomes worship even like the divine worship.
Now water is to be use with respect for it is the salvation God provided to sustain in this world. Misusing water is like cutting short of lifespan here on earth. When we use it right, we are making better world for tomorrow and above all we are acknowledging God’s salvation for this physical world.

Water and healing
Some years back, I came across a magazine telling about the drought in northern African region. The land cracked open and most of the living creatures including human were also dried up literally to skeleton. The land was wounded severely and nothing could heal it except water. On the other side of the globe was Amazon forest in South America. The region is a home for many thousands living creatures. The land has enough water to nourish all the living creatures and it prospers. Water heals the land and nourishes it as mother will nourish her child. When our land is wounded, nothing can heal it except water. Water is the only remedy for the land to bear fruit.
The resurrected water pump will healed the wounded farm of our community. It will water the ground and heal the land.

Water and Salvation
The dictionary meaning of salvation is the saving or being saved from danger, evil, difficulty, destruction, etc. However, there are many religious meaning besides this dictionary meaning. For many Christians, it is being saved from eternal damnation, while for the Hindu attaining ‘moksa’ and so on and so forth. Every religion has their own concept of salvation and somehow it relate to with the dictionary meaning.
Now, imagine life without water! Let me give you one month and try to live without water. I am sure scientist or any expert doctor will tell you how long we can survive without water. We will all die of thirsty and dehydration. Our brothers and sisters in Sahara desert, Gobi desert, Thaar desert and those water scanty places might live little longer than us! Water is a salvation, a physical salvation one. If we don’t care for our physical body, why should we care for our spiritual body for our physical body only makes our spiritual life possible. There won’t be spiritual body if there is no physical body. So water is a salvation prepared by God for all living being regardless of their belief.

The deep-well lesson of life journey
Reviving the deep-well was like seeking God. We fumble and tumble all the way through but the point is we never give up knowing how much it worth when we get it. Sometime we are disappointed and frustrated when little mistake took us one whole day to restart the whole process again. Another lesson I have learn is that, we start from the very beginning again if we committed mistake. So it was something like we start again afresh from the beginning without blemish. It requires large amount of patience to reach the water below. We have found the water and it will cater to many needs of the farm. The farm will in return serve us our needs in many ways. The land will become more fertile and yield more fruits. When we found God, He will prosper our land and the land will bring forth much fruit. Water is a type of God, use with reverent for it will sustain you.
The resurrection of deep-well brought hope for the better fish pond for the community, it brought joy to those who are working on it like the angel rejoice in heavenly when Jesus resurrected from the dead. And it brought happiness and contentment to the thousands of tilapias and hundreds of pineapple trees and not to forget hundreds of UTS community.

Conclusion
Every natural resources will use up sooner than we imagined. The most perilous is the unlimited human desire for more. Men will manipulate anything to gain more, to satisfy the human desire is like counting the star in the night, a clear sky night! Water is not just natural resource, it is life and it has to be treated with care and reverend for it is the salvation of God for all mankind. Jesus won’t have to come if there are only skeletons around. Remember Jesus conversation with the Samaritan woman by the well and He compared water which is physical salvation and His water for the spiritual body.
There is sacredness in the water and we have to realize that it is one of the greatest gifts of God for all living being. If we can’t honor the gifts which we can see by our eyes, how can we appreciate the One which we can’t see by our naked eyes anymore?

25 June, Youth and Campus Ministry Class

Though I couldn't join the class discussion on various issues in doing ministry to youth, I somehow could reflect myself on those topics.Almost all our classmates, except from fellow students from Myanmar and India, shared our reflection on the movie "Saved" (the whole class watched the movie last wednesday). The point of discussion was on the role of Mandy Moore (as Mary Faith or Fay something like that). The role she played was more or less similar to the spirituality of the young people who are involve in the charismatic youth mission today. For example, the pop culture infilterated the worship style. We can't make much difference today between praise and worship group or rock band performing in a concert. Yes, Jesus is Rock! but not the rock of rock & roll. In fact, Jesus is beyond any songs and praise. I am not crtitical about the Praise and Worship but I am concern about the infilteration. Like one youth was misled in the movie, thinking having sex with her gay-boyfriend was the will of God. Than one may ask, what is the will of God? Something true! something noble! something great!and the more somethings! But don't we understant that we can't understant God's will unless it is reveal to us throught Scripture and godly guidance from godly people. One may ask who is godly then? WHosoever fear God and whosoever faithful to God and God's call. It can be pastors, evangelists, lay people! Our logic is not a good guide for knowing God's will. Holy Scripture and Holy Spirit are the only faithful guide who can lead us to know God's will. Mandy Moore's attitude has something to do with her upbringing. However, I am not trying to say, our upbringing is all that matter in our attitude but many times our attitude traced back to our upbringing. Our childhood is very important. If we look Moore from another angle, we can appreciate her zeal in sharing her faith. The only problem here is she is too obsess with what she believe to be true.Another intriguing topic is the way how we open our ministry to the young people. Our instructor was right when she said that most of our evangelistic meetings start with a warning of being in SIN. Certainly, the Filipinos young people will have a problem in this method. However, for instance, like India, we valued the instructions of elders and gurus very much. Most of the times, their instructions were followed without much questions. This is so in the assumtion that they were telling from their experience. So it is same with the gospel, when evangelist or pastor preached that we need to get save from our sinful life, so that we can enjoy being in God. So we readily acknowledge our sinful life and confess it. Infact, no matter how scare or not, we fell guilty of our wrong doing and certainly want to get ride of it. If I don't have anything really bad, I just quitly sit back the pew and continue listening. For many of us, it is a warning for our better. Our parents are usually deciplinarian in nature. So we grew up listening to many threats and warnings. May be we are use to it when someone warn about the deadly hell etcetera etcetera. It scare the hell out of it! Surely, our message should be in context. Someitmes, we need to be warn and sometimes we need to be lifted up.About masturbation!I would say, it is sin. Because it start with all in our mind. If our mind is not dirty, how can we probably come up with such idea. IT IS SIN.

25th June, Interment service

I conduct an interment service for one of our church member at Area E, Dasmarinas. "Barthian" can't be better than Barth! How true it is. The only person whom we can't excell beyond is Jesus. We are His follower and we will never outlive Him. So, I am suggesting that we can outlive any human being. In order to do that, we need to develope our mental. We can consult with the scholars but can't allow ourselves to be bound by the opinions and views of those scholars rather it is a step to climb another stair. Now, shifting our attention to the Parable and Myth; parable subverse myth! Like Asian people, Jesus also love to tell the story in the form of Parable. This parable are not a mere story but contain something subversive in nature. For this reason, people (esply the rich and wealthy) can't tolerate such teaching. His teaching empower the powerless and poor mass. So, the lesson we can draw from here is that our preaching and teaching should empower people. We can't hide the truth, for surely sooner than later, the truth will unveil.

24th June, Pualine Theology class

We explore the life of Paul base on his writing. He was the citizen of Tarsus. In those days, Romans granted citizenship to those who worked for them even if they are Jewish or any others races. So, Paul parents must have been working for Romans. He was Roman by citizenship, Benjamite by tribe and he his education wasfrom Greek tradition. So he was exposed to three worlds: Romans, Jewish, and Greek. Paul conversion to Christianity was rather dramatical according to ACTS account. However, his own version of his conversion in his writing was somewhat less fancied. However, having said that, I don't mean to negate what is written in the ACTS. My point is the differnece in describing the same event. Alright, that should not be an issue here. The more interesting fact about Paul is that he influences the Christian more than any others. Some even go to the extend that they did not bother to consult the historical Jesus, who is our only Founder. So, let us be careful to read side by side with Epistles and Gospels account. In regards to his "thorn in the flesh", it is still open for discussion. One of the intriguing statement of Paul is "For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good. Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me". Can we relate this to the "thorn in the flesh"?.

The story of Neilaguangliu

Cast
Neilaguangliu,Raguangning,Naoguang,Machunguang,Aguangliu,Adailiu,Puanthan,Aluhliu,
Rianrathailiu,Duanthaopou,Ringthailiu,Siamruaithai

Places
#Zeliangrong
#Raguangnam
#Tamenglong
#Beng
#Gangmei Kaikhuang

Not so long ago there was a famine in the land of Zeliangrong. And a certain man of Raguangnam, Tamenglong went to sojourn in the Beng (Silchar), he, and his wife, and his two sons. And the name of the man was Raguangning, and the name of his wife Neilaguangliu, and the name of his two sons Naoguang and Machunguang, of Gangmei kaikhuang of Raguangnam Tamenglong. And they came into the Beng (Silchar), and live there. And Raguangning, Neilaguangliu's husband died; and she was left, and her two sons. And they married with the women of Beng (Silchar); the name of the one was Aguangliu, and the name of the other Adailiu: and they dwelled there about ten years. And Naoguang and Machunguang died also both of them; and Neilaguangliu was left of her two sons and her husband. Then she arose with her daughters in law that she might return from the Beng (Silchar): for she had heard in the Beng (Silchar) how that the KAIPOU RAGUANG had visited his people (people of Raguangnam) in giving them Nab-bi (food). Wherefore she went forth out of the place where she was, and her two daughters in law with her; and they went on the way to return unto the land of Tamenglong. And Neilaguangliu said unto her two daughters in law, “Go, return each to her mother's house: the KAIPOU RAGUANG deal kindly with you, as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me. The KAIPOU RAGUANG grants you that ye may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband.” Then she kissed them; and they lifted up their voice, and wept. And they said unto her, “Surely we will return with thee unto thy village.” And Neilaguangliu said, “Turn again, my daughters: why will ye go with me? Are there yet any more sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands? Turn again, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have a husband. If I should say, I have hope, if I should have a husband also to night, and should also bear sons; would ye tarry for them till they were grown? Would ye stay for them from having husbands? Nay, my daughters; for it grieveth me much for your sakes that the hand of the KAIPOU RAGUANG is gone out against me.” And they lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Aguangliu kissed her mother in law; but Adailiu clave unto her. And she said, “Behold, thy sister in law is gone back unto her village, and unto her racahp-rariak: return thou after thy sister in law.” And Adailiu said, “Entreat me not to leave thee, or to return from following after thee: for whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy Raguang araguang: Where thou diest, will I die, and there will I be buried: the KAIPOU RAGUANG do so to me, and more also, if ought but death part thee and me.” When she saw that she was stedfastly minded to go with her, then she left speaking unto her. So they two went until they came to Raguangnam. And it came to pass, when they were come to Raguangnam that all the villagers were moved about them, and they said, “Is this Neilaguangliu?” And she said unto them, “Call me not Neilaguangliu, call me “Nkhuliu” : for the KAIPOU RAGUANG hath dealt very bitterly with me. I went out full and the KAIPOU RAGUANG hath brought me home again empty: why then call ye me Neilaguangliu, seeing the KAIPOU RAGUANG hath testified against me, and the KAIPOU RAGUANG hath afflicted me? So Neilaguangliu returned, and Adailiu; Bengmei alu, her daughter in law, with her, which returned out of the Beng (Silchar): and they came to Raguangnam in the beginning of the harvest. And Neilaguangliu had a kinsman of her husband's, a mighty man of wealth, of the family of Raguangning; and his name was Puanthan. Adailiu the Bengmei alu said unto Neilaguangliu, “Let me now go to the field, and glean napchu kathouloumei after him in whose sight I shall find grace.” And she said unto her, “Go, my daughter.” And she went, and came, and gleaned in the field after the laotaimeinun: and her hap was to light on a part of the field belonging unto Puanthan, who was of the kindred of Raguangning. And, behold, Puanthan came from Raguangnam, and said unto the laotaimeinun, “KAIPOU RAGUANG be with you”. And they answered him, “KAIPOU RAGUANG bless thee”. Then said Puanthan unto his siamruaimei that was set over the laotaimeinun, “Whose damsel is this?” And the siamruaimei that was set over the laotaimeinun answered and said, “she is Bengmei alu, that came back with Neilaguangliu out of the Beng (Silchar): And she said, ‘I pray you, let me glean and gather after the laotaimeinun among the sheaves’: so she came, and hath continued even from the morning until now, that she tarried a little in the house”. Then said Puanthan unto Adailiu, “Hearest thou not, my daughter? Go not to glean in another field, neither go from hence, but abide here fast by my maidens: Let thine eyes be on the field that they do reap, and go thou after them: have I not charged the young men that they shall not touch thee? And when thou art athirst, go unto the cha-lai (Kettle) and drink of that which the young men have boiled”. Then she fell on her face, and bowed herself to the ground, and said unto him, “Why have I found grace in thine eyes, that thou shouldest take knowledge of me, seeing I am a stranger?” And Puanthan answered and said unto her, “It hath fully been shewed me, all that thou hast done unto thy mother in law since the death of thine husband: and how thou hast left thy father and thy mother, and the land of thy nativity, and art come unto a people which thou knewest not heretofore. The KAIPOU RAGUANG recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the KAIPOU RAGUANG, Raguang of the whole world, under whose wings thou art come to trust.” Then she said, “Let me find favour in thy sight, my Kaipou; for that thou hast comforted me, and for that thou hast spoken friendly unto thine handmaid, though I be not like unto one of thine handmaidens.” And Puanthan said unto her, “At mealtime come thou hither, and eat of the Nab-duam (food), and share whatever nap-gan (menu) they have.” And she sat beside the laotaimeinun: and he reached her nap-puang (parched corn), and she did eat, and was sufficed, and left. And when she was risen up to glean, Puanthan commanded his young men, saying, “Let her glean even among the sheaves, and reproach her not: And let fall also some of the handfuls of purpose for her, and leave them, that she may glean them, and rebuke her not.” So she gleaned in the field until even, and beat out that she had gleaned: and it was about 2 tins of rice corn. And she took it up, and went into the village: and her mother in law saw what she had gleaned: and she brought forth, and gave to her that she had reserved after she was sufficed. Neilaguangliu said unto her, “Where hast thou gleaned to day? And where wroughtest thou? Blessed be he that did take knowledge of thee.” And she shewed her mother in law with whom she had wrought, and said, “The man's name with whom I wrought to day is Puanthan. And Neilaguangliu said unto her daughter in law, “Blessed be he of the KAIPOU RAGUANG, who hath not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead. And Neilaguangliu said unto her, “The man is near of kin unto us, one of our next kinsmen. And Adailiu the Bengmei alu said, “He said unto me also, Thou shalt keep fast by my young men, until they have ended all my harvest.” And Neilaguangliu said unto Adailiu her daughter in law, “It is good, my daughter, that thou go out with his maidens, that they meet thee not in any other field.” So she kept fast by the maidens of Puanthan to glean unto the end of napthan harvest and of wheat harvest; and dwelt with her mother in law. Then Neilaguangliu, her mother in law said unto her, “My daughter, shall I not seek rest for thee that it may be well with thee? And now is not Puanthan of our kindred, with whose maidens thou wast? Behold, he winnoweth rice sheaf to night in the threshing floor. Wash thyself therefore, and anoint thee, and put thy raiment upon thee, and get thee down to the floor: but make not thyself known unto the man, until he shall have done eating and drinking. And it shall be, when he lieth down, that thou shalt mark the place where he shall lie, and thou shalt go in, and uncover his feet, and lay thee down; and he will tell thee what thou shalt do.” And she said unto her, “All that thou sayest unto me I will do.” And she went down unto the floor, and did according to all that her mother in law bade her. When Puanthan had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of corn: and she came softly, and uncovered his feet, and laid her down. And it came to pass at midnight, that the man was afraid, and turned himself: and, behold, a woman lay at his feet. And he said, “Who art thou?” And she answered, “I am Adailiu thine handmaid: spread therefore thy skirt over thine handmaid; for thou art a near kinsman.” And he said, “Blessed be thou of the KAIPOU RAGUANG, my daughter: for thou hast shewed more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as thou followedst not young men, whether poor or rich. And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou requirest: for all the village of my people doth know that thou art a virtuous woman. And now it is true that I am thy near kinsman: howbeit there is a kinsman nearer than I. Tarry this night, and it shall be in the morning, that if he will perform unto thee the part of a kinsman, well; let him do the kinsman's part: but if he will not do the part of a kinsman to thee, then will I do the part of a kinsman to thee, as the KAIPOU RAGUANG liveth: lie down until the morning.” And she lay at his feet until the morning: and she rose up before one could know another. And he said, “Let it not be known that a woman came into the floor.” Also he said, “Bring the vail that thou hast upon thee, and hold it.” And when she held it, he measured six measures of napthan, and laid it on her: and she went into the village. When she came to her mother in law, she said, “Who art thou, my daughter? And she told her all that the man had done to her. And she said, “These six measures of napthan gave he me; for he said to me, “Go not empty unto thy mother in law.”” Then said she, “Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall: for the man will not be in rest, until he has finished the thing this day.” Then went Puanthan up to the Peikai, and sat him down there: and, behold, the kinsman of whom Puanthan spake came by; unto whom he said, Ho, such a one! Turn aside, sit down here. And he turned aside, and sat down. And he took ten men of the Gansu-ganthai of the village, and said, “Sit ye down here.” And they sat down. And he said unto the kinsman, “Neilaguangliu that is come again out of the Beng (Silchar), selleth a parcel of land, which was our brother Raguangning's: And I thought to advertise thee, saying, “Buy it before the inhabitants, and before the Gansu-ganthai of my people. If thou wilt redeem it, redeem it: but if thou wilt not redeem it, then tell me, that I may know: for there is none to redeem it beside thee; and I am after thee.” And he said, “I will redeem it.” Then said Puanthan, “What day thou buyest the field of the hand of Neilaguangliu, thou must buy it also of Adailiu the Bengmei alu, the wife of the dead, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance. And the kinsman said, I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I mar mine own inheritance: redeem thou my right to thyself; for I cannot redeem it. (Now this was the manner in former time in the whole world concerning redeeming and concerning changing, for to confirm all things; a man plucked off his shoe, and gave it to his neighbour: and this was a testimony in the whole world) Therefore the kinsman said unto Puanthan, “Buy it for thee.” So he drew off his shoe. And Puanthan said unto the Gansu-ganthai, and unto all the people, Ye are witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Raguangning's, and all that was Machunguang's and Naoguang's, of the hand of Neilaguangliu. Moreover Adailiu the Bengmei alu, the wife of Naoguang, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the Peikai of his place: ye are witnesses this day. And all the people that were in the Peikai, and the Gansu-ganthai agreed and said, “We are witnesses.” The KAIPOU RAGUANG make the woman that is come into thine house like Aluhliu and like Rianrathailiu, which two did build the house of the whole world: and do thou worthily in Tamenglong, and be famous in Raguangnam: And let thy house be prosperous, from whom the seed which the KAIPOU RAGUANG shall give thee of this young woman. So Puanthan took Adailiu, and she was his wife: and when he went in unto her, the KAIPOU RAGUANG gave her conception, and she bare a son. And the women said unto Neilaguangliu, Blessed be the KAIPOU RAGUANG, which hath not left thee this day without a kinsman, that his name may be famous in the whole world. And he shall be unto thee a restorer of thy life, and a nourisher of thine old age: for thy daughter in law, which loveth thee, which is better to thee than seven sons, hath born him. And Neilaguangliu took the child, and laid it in her bosom, and became nurse unto it. And the women her neighbours gave it a name, saying, “There is a son born to Neilaguangliu; and they called his name Siamruaithai: he is the father of many great people in the land of Zeliangrong.

welcome

Hello and welcome everyone.
